See our Speeches guide below to help you plan

The Speeches guide

The traditional order of speeches is as follows.

  • The bride's father proposes a toast to the bride and groom.

  • The brides father continues, with insight into his daughter.

  • The groom then responds on behalf of his wife and himself.

  • The groom usually uses this opportunity to say 'My wife and I for the first time.

  • The groom thanks all those involved in organising of the wedding.

  • The groom may wish to present his and the bride's mother with bouquets.

  • The groom thanks his attendants and presents them with his gifts.

  • The groom then speaks about his new wife.

  • The groom will then propose a toast to the bridesmaids.

  • After the groom has finished, the bride may wish to speak.

  • The best man responds on behalf of the bridesmaids.

  • The best man then announces any messages, telegrams or e-mails from absentees.

  • The best man then delivers his speech where he talks about the groom, often including some amusing reflections and memories of the past

Wedding Cake

  • Traditionally the wedding cake consists of one tier for every generation attending the wedding and is made from a rich fruit cake covered in white frosting (Icing) and the top tier is saved for the christening of the first born child.
  • A rich fruit cake if made and iced correctly will easily last a year or more until the first born arrives but modern food hygene regulations may not allow this
  • Today anything goes regarding cake design and type so let your personality shine through and have a cake that says what you and you partner about.
  • The cake is traditionally cut after the speeches and toasts, and would normally conclude the formal part of the wedding reception.

 The First Dance

Traditionally the bride & groom dance for the first time as husband & wife to a tune that holds dear to their heart , this would usually be performed with the guest surrounding a clear dance floor.

The Father Daughter Dance / Second Dance

  • Traditionally the farther of the bride now dances with his newly married daughter

Good songs for the Father Daughter dance.

Daddy Dance With Me - Michelle Barclay.
Dance With My Father - The Drifters.
Daddy's Little Girl - The Shires.

Third Dance (or half way through the second dance)
  • The Bride swops over from dancing with her father to dance with her Grooms Father
The Groom dances with his Mother swopping over half way through to dance with his Brides Mother.
Bridesmaids and Groomsmen dance with their own partners

Guests are encouraged to join in with their partners.

Throwing the Posy & Garter

  • This traditionally finds out who will be next to marry, The bride throws her posy over her shoulder to all the single & unmarried ladies, the one who catches the posy is said to be next to marry this can also be done with the Brides garter that traditionally the groom removes with his teeth she then throws it to all the single & unmarried guys & as with the posy the guy who catches the garter is said to be next to marry.

Departure of the Bride and Groom

  • This is a time for the best man and friends of the couple to be a little mischievous. They would decorate the going away car with balloons, ribbons and tin cans tied to the bumper on a string etc without the couples' knowledge. The DJ or best man would announce the departure of the newlywed Traditional all the guests then link hands in an archway and form a tunnel that the Bride & Groom walk through saying goodbye to all their guest as they leave for their honeymoon or hotel. The guests would usually participate in the throwing of confetti or rice over the happy couple as they pass through the tunnel..So as not to disappoint the guests, it is recommended the couple have a strategically placed second car a few miles up the road, in which they would continue their journey.
If you want any of the above included in your evening please inform the DJ at the pre booking meeting.
